***Random Thoughts***

Yes, you’ve read that right. Jinder Mahal is your new WWE Champion. I honestly don’t know what to say right now. I can say that I’m shocked and surprised, even that’s a grave understatement. Whiles it’s nice to see someone new become champion, but this is someone who was used mostly as a jobber at the beginning of the year and a comedy character just three years ago. What I’m trying to say is that I will find it difficult to take this guy seriously.

They’ve rushed his push.

I can also see why people might be mad about it too since WWE has booked Mahal so poorly for many years. All of a sudden, he’s ripped like never before and they decide to push him. That’s where I can see the anger coming in and it’s justified a bit.

How long will he hold onto the title for? No idea. The possibilities do intrigue me, but I do worry that it might be a terrible reign.

I made a comment on Facebook that is Jinder won I would get a picture of his face tattooed on my arse. I am willing to go ahead with that before the year is over, but I will only do it for the right price.

That awkward moment when Jinder Mahal steals Nakamura’s thunder. He had a solid match with Ziggler, not that I expected anything less from guys as talented as these. It was the perfect way to kick off the show. Their match was near identical to the ones that they had during the most recent European tour but longer. Ziggler got in more offense than I thought he would get. He hit all of his signature spots and kept getting near falls. The best one was the superkick to the back of the head with Nakamura selling it like he was knocked out. I don’t think anyone thought that Ziggler had a chance. Predictable is fine, though, because they had to put Nakamura over.

Match of the night belongs to the United States Championship match. People complain about the cheap ending, I didn’t mind it as it opens up the possibilities of rematches. Come to think of it, I don’t believe there hasn’t been a finish like that before where somebody got their foot stuck in the announce desk. The work in the match was outstanding as expected. They are two of the best in-ring performers in the company (Styles is the best) and I’m not surprised that they had an entertaining match like that. They didn’t take it to that next level with a lot of believable near falls. When they got near falls they were good, but the crowd didn’t buy them as the finish. I’m glad they got 20 minutes because they delivered one of the better PPV matches this year. It also leaves us wanting to see more of them, which should help their next match.

Sami Zayn winning on a PPV? Another unexpected result that I welcome because Sami is a damn good worker. The crowd wasn’t into it that much, though, which is what happens when you book wrestlers to lose so much. It’s hard for people to believe in both of them. I think Zayn won to make people think Corbin doesn’t have a lot of momentum. Corbin hasn’t won on PPV in a while, so there is some truth to it.

The tag title match was pure comedy. The work was good towards the end and the crowd was well into it. There were some fun moments with Breezango using the different disguises. The only negative I can give is that they should have booked Breezango to have had more near falls. The outcome was never in doubt. Usos vs. The New Day is going to be the big Smackdown tag feud heading towards SummerSlam.

The Women’s tag match was standard. Got no problem with the Welcoming Committee winning. Also don’t have a problem with Natalya getting the win for the team because she hasn’t had any meaningful wins, so now she can claim that she deserves a title opportunity (which I think she will get either at MITB or SummerSlam) I thought they would showcase Charlotte a lot more than they did. Instead, she barely had a role in the match.

How dead was the crowd during Harper v Rowan? It sucks because they both worked hard, despite the match being average at best. I think the problem here is that there was no story going into it. I want to see Harper on the receiving end of a big push because he’s so talented in the ring. I just don’t think WWE is going to get behind him enough to push him anytime soon. Harper got the win back after Rowan beat him two weeks ago in London (I was there).

Overall Show Rating (out of 10): 6.5

It was an okay show with the best match belonging to Kevin Owens & AJ Styles. Nakamura’s debut was handled well and is one of the more memorable moments of the year so far, but the big talking point belongs to Jinder Mahal being the new WWE Champion.

As for the rest of the card, everything else was pretty average. There wasn’t anything that bad, though, so that’s why it gets a 6.5 out of 10 score.
