WWE SummerSlam 2016 Predictions

The 29th edition of SummerSlam returns to Brooklyn, New York for the second year running. It should be a hot crowd even though the PPV is running four hours and there’s a two-hour Kick-off Show, so it’s going to be a long, long night! Brock Lesnar makes his return to pay per view to face Randy Orton and we’ll see the crowning of the first ever Universal Champion.

This is a prediction blog where we’ll fight it out for points, and here is the league table so far.

RIF – 119.5pts

Dan – 109.5pts

Michael – 100.5pts

Joe – 90pts

Best of 7 Series (Match 1)

Sheamus vs. Cesaro

RIF: Sheamus

Joe: Cesaro

Michael: Sheamus

Dan: Cesaro

I like the idea of the Best of 7 and I reckon Cesaro will win it 4-3. This could be the making of Cesaro if booked correctly. It worked for Booker T & Chris Benoit back in WCW, the thing with that series was that both men were fighting for the Television Title. I hope some sort of prize is rewarded to the winner like a shot at the US Title or the Universal Title. Give them something to fight over.

American Alpha, The Hype Bros & The Usos (Faces) vs. Breezango, The Ascension & The Vaudevillians (Heels)

RIF: Faces

Joe: Faces

Michael: Faces

Dan: Faces

Didn’t they already do this on Smackdown? Going with the good guys here. American Alpha aren’t going to lose on their pay per view (pre-show) debut.

Sami Zayn & Neville vs. The Dudley Boyz

RIF: Sami Zayn & Neville

Joe: Sami Zayn & Neville

Michael: Sami Zayn & Neville

Dan: Sami Zayn & Neville

It’s going to be a clean sweep for the babyfaces on the pre-show. It’s only a matter of time before the Dudleys split up, allowing Bubba Ray to readopt his Bully Ray character.

Carmella, Naomi & Becky Lynch vs. Natalya, Alexa Bliss & TBA

RIF: Carmella, Naomi & Becky Lynch

Joe: Carmella, Naomi & Becky Lynch

Michael: Carmella, Naomi & Becky Lynch

Dan: Carmella, Naomi & Becky Lynch

I really didn’t know if WWE were going to go ahead with this match since Eva Marie’s suspension this past Thursday but it appears as though they are. Who will replace Eva? I’m not sure. There isn’t anyone else on the Smackdown roster who can. I doubt it’ll be Nikki Bella as people would most likely cheer for her. Either way, I’m going with the faces to win this one.

WWE Intercontinental Championship

The Miz © vs. Apollo Crews

RIF: The Miz

Joe: The Miz

Michael: The Miz

Dan: The Miz

The problem I have here is that WWE hasn’t done a good job of making Apollo Crews look like someone who can dethrone Miz as Intercontinental champion. Sure he won a number one contender match to earn a shot, then what? Nothing. Make us care or at least believe in him, WWE! I’d be very surprised if Miz doesn’t walk away with the gold. He’ll cheat to win, perhaps Maryse will get involved in the finish to cause a distraction.

Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs. Jeri-KO

RIF: Enzo & Cass

Joe: Enzo & Cass

Michael: Enzo & Cass

Dan: Enzo & Cass

I’m predicting that this will be the opening contest as Enzo & Cass do such a great job of hyping up the crowd. The crowd will be especially hot for the hometown boy, Big Cass. I love the chemistry between Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens. It just clicks. As much as I want these guys to win I have to accept that it’s not going to happen. The role of Jericho and Owens in this match is to beat up Enzo for much of it, take the Kevin Nash-like offense of Big Cass and get beat. It’s all about elevating the Enzo & Cass and to get them ready for a tag team title feud in the near future.

WWE World Tag Team Championship

The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) © vs. The Club (Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson)

RIF: The Club

Joe: The Club

Michael: The Club

Dan: The Club

It’s the end of the line for The New Day as your WWE World Tag Team Champions and probably going to end their run as a group. That makes me sad because the three of them are magic. Who would have thought that they would have their own breakfast cereal? (Not yet available in the UK but I’ve been constantly e-mailing Tesco to stock it otherwise I’ll turn heel on their asses and start shopping as ASDA or The Co-Op) As good as a unit as they are, we all know that groups in wrestling don’t last forever. The story going in is that Big E is out injured after he was attacked by Anderson and Gallows. It sets up another story where Big E could come back and say that he didn’t lose the titles, they did. Anderson and Gallows already have a ready-made angle with Enzo & Cass, so the title change makes sense here.

WWE Women’s Championship

Sasha Banks © vs. Charlotte

RIF: Sasha Banks

Joe: Sasha Banks

Michael: Sasha Banks

Dan: Sasha Banks

What’s interesting here is that various betting websites are listing Charlotte as the favourite. That could mean nothing, but could also mean that people that know the results bet that way and it changed things. That’s what tends to happen with the betting odds. I’m hoping they get at least 15-20 minutes of ring time like their Raw encounter. If they do it should be great. There may not be much drama without a title change, though, I’m still going to enjoy it either way.

WWE United States Championship

Rusev © vs. Roman Reigns

RIF: Roman Reigns via DQ

Joe: Roman Reigns

Michael: Rusev

Dan: Roman Reigns via DQ

What I can’t understand is that they had a long, non-title match on Raw where Reigns won clean. That was a mistake, and it’s something that WWE has been guilty of doing for some time now. Had Reigns not violated the Wellness Policy I highly doubt he’d be in a position where he’d be competing for a mid-card championship. It’s been a fall from grace since his WrestleMania 32 main event victory.

AJ Styles vs. John Cena

RIF: John Cena

Joe: John Cena

Michael: AJ Styles

Dan: AJ Styles

WWE’s 50/50 booking strikes again as AJ Styles and John Cena are one fall apiece in their rivalry. Styles should win so that he can be lined up as the next WWE Title contender, but do I really think he’s going to beat Cena twice in PPV matches? No. I’m pretty excited about this in terms of match quality. They have worked together a lot in the last couple of months, so the chemistry is obviously there. Bottom line, I’ll go with Cena although I’d really like to be wrong about that.

WWE World Heavyweight Championship

Dean Ambrose © vs. Dolph Ziggler

RIF: Dean Ambrose

Joe: Dean Ambrose

Michael: Dean Ambrose

Dan: Dean Ambrose

The build for this match has been really good. Far better than the Universal Title match on Raw. I’m going for Ambrose to retain the title because I feel like he’s going to have a few more months with the gold, but I like the way Ziggler has been built up as a credible threat. I’m looking forward to seeing where things go after the loss. Heel turn, perhaps? The Smackdown roster does need some depth in the heel department, so having this rivalry move forward with Ziggler in a heel role could benefit both guys.

WWE Universal Championship

Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins

RIF: Finn Balor

Joe: Seth Rollins

Michael: Finn Balor

Dan: Seth Rollins

This is a tough one. If you have Balor debut the “Demon King” look in a main roster match for the first time and he loses then you are damaging the character from the off. On the other hand, it does seem smarter to put a new title on the more established guy in terms of main roster credibility. That’s why this is so hard to predict. I am excited for the match itself. They match up very well in terms of size, style in the ring, the moves that they do and the number of credible moves they have. All that plus the addition of a red-hot Brooklyn crowd makes this all the more of a must-see contest. I’m going with Balor because this is one of the biggest shows of the year and it sends out a positive message to put Balor over huge.

Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton

RIF: Brock Lesnar

Joe: Randy Orton

Michael: Brock Lesnar

Dan: Randy Orton

I think this will be the main event as it has received the most media coverage. That’s what a guy like Brock Lesnar can bring to the table. What makes it even more interesting is that it’s a fresh matchup, one that we haven’t seen since 2002. Please make this a competitive bout, WWE. We don’t want a repeat of what happened at WrestleMania against Dean Ambrose. As for match result, I’ve jumped back and forth between the two After Brock Lesnar was announced as using PED’s leading up to his UFC 200 fight, I feel like WWE is embarrassed a bit. They didn’t suspend him because he’s a part timer, but they could have him lose to Orton. It’s Orton that is a full-time performer and he’s a big enough name that fans would believe it if he beat Lesnar. I think it’s going to be a very competitive match that is going to be great, but in the end, it’s Brock that gets the win with a third F5.

Enjoy SummerSlam, guys. Feel free to post your predictions in the comment section below and I’ll be back with my Random Thoughts blog on Monday.
