Back once again with my random thoughts on the most recent WWE pay per view event, in this case, it was Extreme Rules. You know how this works by now, I hope. If you haven’t seen Extreme Rules, please, look away now:

*Random Thoughts*

Our Lord and Saviour Seth Rollins has returned. Seriously, what an incredible pop he got from the New Jersey crowd. What I liked about his return was how sudden it all was. They didn’t play his entrance music they just had him run to the ring and hit Reigns with a Pedigree. Good luck trying to put him over as a heel, WWE.

I enjoyed the main event very much. The intensity, the big spots and AJ bumping around like crazy to make Roman…………wait for it………. LOOK $TRONG~! The interference by G&A and The Usos was as expected, but I thought the spots they did really worked. The final spot leading to the finish was incredible. It isn’t easy to jump off the top ropes and connect a guy with a perfect Spear, but the timing was flawless. Reigns does have his critics, but he does deliver the goods when competing under big match situations.

The opening tag match was perfect with the right team going over. I liked how they didn’t cheat to win. Anderson and Gallows aren’t the type of guys to resort to cheating as they believe in their abilities to become victorious. The booing for the Usos was telling. I like them as performers, but they are so stale. Perhaps that’s the reason behind the negative response by the crowd, that and their allegiance to Roman Reigns. They just need to tweak their persona/ gimmick slightly. Don’t know where the Usos go from here, but the Club are surely in contention for the tag titles.

The New Day won as expected. Xavier Woods kicking out of the Whirling Dervish was a surprise, and it drew a response from the crowd. Big E did a solid job after the hot tag. Those suplexes were impressive, as was the spear through the ropes. It was nice to see Woods getting the win for his team as he not in their matches that often. He has a lot of talent, so give him a chance.

Bit like the Hell in a Cell match at WrestleMania, the Asylum match went on for an absolute age. I was bored by it in the end. I’ve got nothing against Ambrose or Jericho as performers, I rank them highly, but the stipulation wasn’t working. My biggest grip with this match was that some of the weapons came off as comedy spots instead of being a violent contest. The thumbtacks got people out of their seats, so it wasn’t all bad.

The fatal four way match stole the show. Michael Cole described it as a match of the year contender, I agree. The real match of the year is still Nakamura vs. Sami Zayn, but this is the best match from the main roster this year. The standing ovation says it all. Those guys all earned it. Give a lot of credit to Zayn, Cesaro and Owens for being three of the best performers in WWE today. While Miz isn’t at their level all the time, but he showed he is good enough to be part of something special. He is quite underrated. I predicted that Miz would retain the title here, mainly because I can see Owens, Cesaro and Zayn participating in the Money in the Bank ladder match next month. Highly recommended, check it out.

The women’s title match was solid, as expected, but was on the receiving end of another poor finish. At least it was better than that screwjob ending at Payback. So creative! Not being able to do nearfalls hurt them a lot because the crowd wasn’t into it as much as they might normally react to things. Natalya should have had some more offense because she really didn’t do much offence before setting up the Sharpshooters spot. The involvement of Dana Brooke was something I didn’t see coming. With Emma being out for the rest of the year it seems likely they want to pair Charlotte and Brooke up. I do feel that this the end of Ric Flair as far as being in Charlotte’s corner is concerned. They could have a segment on Raw where Charlotte brags how she won without her dad’s help and no longer needs him anymore. The Charlotte/ Dana Brooke partnership does intrigue me.

Overall show rating (out of 10): 7

That’s a good score. Could have been higher if the Asylum match didn’t drag on or the women’s match wasn’t as lousy.  The main event and four way matches were the highlights with the four way being match of the night. Lastly, Rollins return was a complete surprise. They didn’t mention him on TV or hype his return in any way. Let’s just hope he doesn’t get hurt again. He has been missed.

2016 PPV Rankings so far:

Royal Rumble – 8

Payback – 7

Extreme Rules – 7

WrestleMania 32 – 6.5

Fastlane – 6
