Random Thoughts on NXT Takeover: Brooklyn

NXT

NXT kicked off the SummerSlam weekend with a Takeover special live from the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York. This is me sharing my random thoughts on the event and of course, that means spoilers are up ahead. If you haven’t seen the show look away now.

*Random Thoughts*

Having the show at the Barclays Centre was a breath of fresh air from having it at Full Sail. It’s also a clear sign of how much NXT has grown since the early days. I imagine that future Takeover events will take place at much bigger venues to give the shows that big event feel.

It was so cool to finally see Jushin Liger compete in a WWE ring. I’ve been a fan of the guy for a long time so seeing him in WWE was a special moment. He’s had much better matches in the past against the likes of Brian Pillman, The Great Muta and Tiger Mask, but for a 50 year old he is still at the top of his game. I can imagine he’ll make another appearance for the company down the line and it’s pretty realistic that he’ll be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame next year. I can’t help but imagine if Hideo Itami wasn’t injured that he would have been the one to face Liger perhaps that could very well be the case once his injury clears up.
What an absolutely fantastic wrestling match Bayley vs. Sasha Banks was. It wasn’t just great for women’s wrestling, but for wrestling in general. They delivered and told a good story with Sasha working on Bayley’s injured hand. For this year’s Rif Rasslin Awards I’ll be doing a special NXT section, this is currently pencilled in as MOTY. It’s funny when I look back on all the Takeover shows this year the women matches have stolen the show. That’s a testament to how talented the girls are down in NXT. Bayley has come a long way from her fan girl gimmick. I’m so pleased for her and the likes of Sasha, Becky, Paige and Charlotte for proving that the women can step up to the plate. Women’s wrestling is on the rise and I look forward to the future.

The tag title match was very entertaining. Full with some exciting nearfalls and the two girls (Alexa Bliss and Blue Pants) were used effectively for the finish. Blake and Murphy did a great job as champions. They carried the titles well and become a better tag team in the process. I’m genuinely happy for The Vaudevillains, Aiden English has been employed by the WWE for three years now, so it’s nice to see him with goal around his waist and Gotch has paid his dues. A classic example that hard work pays off eventually.

Samoa Joe’s TNA run ended with a whimper so it’s cool seeing him looking motivated and on top of his game again. Not a huge fan of Baron Corbin, but remember NXT is supposed to be developmental and Corbin does have a lot of potential. Working with veteran stars like Joe and Rhyno will be beneficial for him in the long run.

The main event was quality. The ladder spots drew good reactions from the crowd since none of the other matches on the show used weapons. I also liked how that didn’t use that slow climb ladder spot too often. Balor hitting the double foot stomp from top of the ladder was a highlight as was Kevin Owens mocking Sami Zayn’s shoulder injury. That was hilarious. Balor winning makes sense since Owens is now a full member of the main roster, so he’ll be phasing out of NXT going forward.

Overall show rating: (out of 10) 9.5
From top to bottom, the matches were top quality so they deserve much praise for that. The women continue to steal the show and I couldn’t be happier for them. It was announced on the show that NXT will undergo their first ever UK tour this December and you can bet your arse I’ll be there. Much like having the show in Brooklyn, this just sums how big NXT is getting and far it’s come from the ‘Pros & Rookies’ era. It’s only getting bigger from here on now. Wouldn’t surprise me if they introduced another NXT show was added on the Network.
