Random thoughts on NXT Takeover: Unstoppable

Last night was the second NXT Takeover event of the year, Unstoppable. As always I’m sharing some random thoughts on the show, and that means that this post does contain spoilers so if you haven’t seen the show turn away now.

The big news coming out of this show is the much anticipated debut of Samoa Joe. Yeah, that Samoa Joe! It was always rumoured that he’ll eventually debut in NXT but we weren’t sure when he’d appear. It’s very much like the way Sting debuted at Survivor Series last year. Nice to see that he’s using the ‘Samoa Joe’ name. Kevin’s selling was terrific. He was like the school bully who had finally met his match! The stare down with Owens was great, a brawl would have raised the roof, but I understood why they didn’t go down that route. They want people to tune in to see what happens next. I’ve been a huge fan of Joe for a number of years now. I watched him in Ring of Honor and TNA hoping that he’d finally arrive in WWE one day. Now it’s finally here. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for the guy.

Match of the night belongs to Sasha Banks vs. Becky Lynch. A classic wrestling match between two girls who know each other and were able to tell a great story. Again, NXT proves that WWE’s women roster can wrestle and aren’t just eye candy. They can get the job done providing they get the belief and opportunity to do so. The Psychology was point on. Banks targeted Becky’s arm from the off go and that’s the reason why she’s still the women’s champion. Lynch was all emotional at the end when she received a standing ovation. She deserved it. Prove that hard work pays off eventually. This match also proved that they belong with the men in terms of having long, competitive matches. My challenge to those on the main roster is to have a match which can equal or better this one. This is currently my pick for NXT’s match of the year. Damn good job ladies.

Tyler Breeze vs. Finn Balor was the second best match of the night. I figured Balor would win just because I had a hunch that Owens would be walking away with the title, so it made perfect sense. Both guys are excellent performers and have gimmicks that work. Breeze’s entrance was hilarious. It had Zoolander written all over it! They wouldn’t feel out of place on the main roster, but until that day comes they’re great assets for the NXT roster. Originally Hideo Itami was scheduled to be in this match, but was ruled out through injury. He’s out for six months. That sucks because he’s a major player on the NXT roster and someone I look forward to see wrestling. His presence will be missed that’s for sure.

The Divas tag match was good and made full use of the time it was allotted. Thought Brooke would win since she’s new on the scene and management have high hopes for her. Charlotte looks likely to get called up to the main roster real soon and I’m not going to question that at all. Bayley is mega over. If anyone is going to take the title away from Sasha Banks it’s her. She’s an energetic, fun babyface who can rally up a crowd. It’s evident that Bayley loves what she’s doing. That smile on her face whenever she makes her entrance isn’t for show, it’s legit. Like many of the divas on the NXT roster she’d be a great addition to the main diva’s roster.

Speaking about great additions, Amore & Cassidy need to be brought up to the main roster ASAP.  Their mic work (along with Carmella) is without fault. Their act would make an instant connection with a larger crowd. I’m also a fan of Blake & Murphy also (or the Dub-Step guys as a friend from work calls them). Alexa’s heel turn made sense as she’s been interacting with the champs for weeks now and the finish is just another added layer to the story. Expect this feud to continue.

Rhyno verses Baron Corbin served its purpose. A match designed to for the younger guy to pick up the win over the experienced veteran. There’s always been talk of adding more experienced guys to the NXT roster, Bubba Ray Dudley springs to mind. I’m all for it as the young guns can get a rub from just being in the same ring as the likes of Rhyno and The Brian Kendrick (what happened to him?), but keep the focus on the rising stars.

Overall show rating: (out of 10): 8.5

The ending with Samoa Joe making his long awaited debut was nothing short of incredible. It was an amazing moment seeing him face to face with Kevin Owens. I’m intrigued to find out what’s next for both guys. Banks & Lynch is one of the greatest women’s wrestling matches I’ve ever seen, I’d even put it on par with a women’s match from a Japanese wrestling promotion (yes, it was that damn good). Aside from that and the opening match everything else was average. I love these takeover shows. I love NXT in general. Watching Raw and Smackdown seems like a chore most days, but not with NXT. It’s a throwback to the days when wrestling was all about what happened in the ring and not the backstage antics.
