Random thoughts

Right off the bat I need to say that I loved the crowd. I always consider Chicago, along with Toronto, New York and anywhere in the UK, to be one of the best wrestling cities. They’re a rowdy bunch that’s for sure.

Did Randy Orton honestly expect that Kane or J&J wouldn’t interfere? I also didn’t like the idea that the match was centred on what is Kane going to do as oppose to two talented performers battling it out for a major championship title. It makes Orton and Rollins seem less important. The title also looks less important because the story doesn’t even remotely revolve around deciding who the better wrestler is. Orton using the Pedigree was a huge fuck you to the authority but Rollins using the RKO was lame. Wasn’t the stipulation that the RKO was banned? That screams out re-match to me.  The match itself was fine, not a patch on their WrestleMania outing.

It was announced that Daniel Bryan would not be able to compete. Instead, Bad News Barrett faced Neville on the pre-show. Check it out. It deserves to be on the main show! The interesting thing I’ve noticed about Neville is that every match he’s had since being called up to the main roster is against either a current or former champion. I just wanted to point that out. Will it lead to anything? Maybe. It does show that management has confidence in him working against people who’ve experienced high profile match situations. I’ve been a fan of Nev ever since I saw him wrestle live all those years ago in his hometown of Newcastle. Mark my words; if he can work on his promos then he’ll be one of the leading stars in the WWE. Bo-lieve that!

Boy, I bet the announcers got a kick out of saying “arse” every five minutes huh? It’s like that episode of the Simpsons where Homer admits that he can’t help giggling like a schoolgirl every time he says ‘titmouse’.  I’ve got visions of Vince rolling around on the floor in full blown hysterics, pissing his pants and screaming, “HE SAID ARSE!!! SAY IT AGAIN AND I’LL GIVE YOU A RAISE, AND MAKE SURE YOU SAY ‘ME ARSE’ NOT ‘MY ARSE’ AND SAY IT IN A COMICAL IRISH ACCENT TOO DAMMIT!!” Imagine if this was called a “Kiss Me Bum” match, he would literary laugh his head right off! When Ziggler won, I just knew that Sheamus wouldn’t be kissing his arse (Christ they’ve got me saying it now); I saw the low blow coming a mile off. The camera cut to an audience member who looked completely stunned. Jaw on the floor and everything! It’s still real to him dammit!  It was a great heel showcase, because he should be a dick and doing thing like this should make people hate him. Sheamus is right at home as the bully.

The Last Man Standing match exceeded my expectations. I thought the crowd would shit all over the match considering who was involved but Reigns & Show worked hard and completely won them over. The finish is about what I expected, Show gets laid out and something heavy gets put on him to keep him down for the count. Hey, at least it’s better than that awful “ducktape you’re opponents legs to the ropes” finish we’ve seen before!  I don’t think that this was a great match, but it was way better than I thought it would be and I ended up enjoying it. Good work by both guys. Gotta make Roman Reigns look strong folks.

I had high hopes for the Street Fight but it wasn’t executed correctly. Admittedly, the backstage fighting was a welcoming addition and a throwback to an attitude era hardcore match but they really need to do the part with the car? It was unnecessary and took away from the match. It could have been a whole lot better.

The tag title match was the match of the night for me. It was a really enjoyable match where everything just clicked into place. Tyson & Cesaro seemed it hit it off as faces and New Day looked comfortable being heels that don’t realise they are heels. Xavier Woods was funny in his cheer lady like role and acting confused over the ‘New Day Sucks’ chants. “Why, what did we do? We’re winning”, I laughed out for that! I would like to have seen Kidd & Cesaro get a longer run with the gold, but New Day hopefully will continue to get opportunities to have good matches and that much needed shot in the arm also.

Why are they continuing the Cena/Rusev feud? They’ve already booked another re-match at Payback in an I Quit match. The chain match wasn’t anything special. It appears that Lana will be splitting from Rusev soon. I don’t think it helped Cena in any way, it ended up making Rusev look very weak in all honesty. The shame here is that they had done so well building him up and he had really grown as a performer, but he came out of the Cena feud damaged. They will have to do a lot to get that steam back.

COME ON NIKKI~! Damn that got annoying real quick. I like Naomi’s new attitude as a heel. She’s shown more personality as a heel then she has done before as a face. It was a good match which was given its fair share of time. I still don’t like how the Bella’s are faces all of a sudden. How are we supposed to like them if we’ve not been given a reason to like them? Lazy booking. I expect a re-match at Payback with Naomi getting the win there.

Bo Dallas is the best. Shame that Skip Sheffield fella had to ruin what was an inspiring promo. Attention whore!

Overall Show Rating (out of 10): 5

So now that WrestleMania season is over it’s back to basics for WWE. Extreme Rules was looking to be a good show overall as we headed into the main event. We had some good wrestling and a good crowd, but unfortunately the booking is what really hurt the show. This was a below average effort; if the booking of Cena vs. Rusev and Rollins vs. Orton is better, the overall show becomes much better. The tag title and Reigns v Big Show were the highlights from this show.

2015 Pay Per View Rankings so far

WrestleMania 31 – 9.5

Extreme Rules – 5

Fastlane – 4.5
