For the first time since 2001, WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler will no longer be announcing Monday Night Raw. Instead he’ll be commentating on Smackdown with Booker T replacing him on Raw, Lawler will continue to provide commentary on Pay Per Views. With the shake-up, the new commentary teams are as followed:
RAW – Booker T, John Bradshaw Layfield & Michael Cole
SMACKDOWN – Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler & Bryon Saxton
PPV – Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler & John Bradshaw Layfield
These changes will come into effect next week. Bit of a shock, but I feel it’s the right call. I respect Jerry Lawler but I do feel his best days are behind him. He was one half of the Attitude Era commentary team with Jim Ross throughout the late 90’s which is often dubbed as the greatest announce team of all time. Lawler was the heel commentator like Bobby Heenan and Jesse Ventura before him, and what a heel he was. He was such a dick! His sucking up to Vince throughout his feud with Stone Cold was fantastic. I’m happy for Booker’s new role. He’s got a grimy voice which is prefect for wrestling style commentary. Remember his time on Smackdown? Seriously he was my guilty pleasure at one point (“Sucky Ducky Quack Quack” “Oh Mah Goodness” all the classics are returning). It’s interesting to see Bryon Saxton replace Tom Philips though. Philips was good but Saxon has more charisma and having him work with Cole & Lawler will only be beneficial for his development.
