WWE SummerSlam 2014 Prediction Contest

SummerSlam is traditionally the number two event in the WWE calendar and they’ve done a great job in building up this event. The card looks great, in particular, the main event which will see WWE World Heavyweight Champion John Cena take on Brock Lesnar. Elsewhere, Brie Bella will get revenge on Stephanie McMahon in what will be Steph’s first match in 11 years, Paige will challenge her “frienemy” AJ Lee for the Divas Championship and Roman Reigns will take on Randy Orton. It’s shaping to be a great show!

You should know the deal right now guys, this is a prediction contest for points and here’s the league table so far:

  1. RIF – 110.5
  2. Michael – 109.5
  3. Dan – 97.5
  4. Joe – 88

It’s very tight and that’s largely because I fucked up at Battleground! Can I redeem myself here? Let’s get it on!!

Pre Show Match

Cesaro vs. Rob Van Dam

RIF: RVD

Joe: RVD

Michael: Cesaro

Dan: Cesaro

How much build up has this match had? Zero! I hate the Cesaro has been booked lately. Since the start of the year he’s gone from competing in a Elimination Chamber match, winning the Andre the Giant battle royal at WrestleMania and to becoming a Paul Heyman guy. I would hate to think that Vince has lost faith in him because Cesaro is a talented guy. Rank one up for Mr Monday Night!

Lumberjack match

Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins

RIF: Seth Rollins

Joe: Seth Rollins

Michael: Dean Ambrose

Dan: Dean Ambrose

Not really a fan of the Lumberjack stipulation to be honest, I guess they went down that route so Rollins can’t run away and Ambrose can get his hands on him. If that’s the case, why not have a Steel Cage match? I love this feud and it’s a serious contender for feud of the year! I have faith in Rollins and Ambrose, and if anyone can make a lumberjack match worth watching it’s these two creative maniacs. This is another match that will likely have a rematch in the near future. Since Ambrose is going to film the WWE film “Lockdown” soon, he may be out for about six weeks or so. If that’s the case he could go over here and then get injured by Rollins on Raw, which would lead to that other match. However, I’m going with a Rollins win. Has the potential to be match of the night.

WWE Intercontinental Championship

The Miz © vs. Dolph Ziggler

RIF: Miz

Joe: Miz

Michael: Dolph Ziggler

Dan: Miz

I might get some heat for this but I love Miz’s new gimmick, even if he does remind me of Mortal Kombat’s Johnny Cage! It’s given him a much needed breath of fresh air and some added motivation to better himself. His face run was terrible, not his fault though, I blame creative for that one. Ziggler is on the rise again and I truly hope he reaches the top again because he deserves it. I’d be surprised if Miz lost because his Hollywood heel gimmick is fresh but I do expect this feud to continue to the next 2 PPVs.

WWE Divas Championship

AJ Lee © vs. Paige

RIF: AJ Lee

Joe: AJ Lee

Michael: Paige

Dan: AJ Lee

I hope to God that the fans are genuinely into this one and don’t ruin it by chanting “CM Punk” throughout! Paige’s heel turn seems more natural to her. Her offense looks better as a heel, her mannerisms are just right and her promos are better to watch when she’s talking about hurting poor AJ Lee. In the case of AJ, she’s not that interesting as a face. As a heel she was this crazy chick involved in major angles and then she became a dominant champion, but as a face she’s fallen victim to WWE’s poor writers that don’t know how to make faces interesting. Having AJ lose to Eva Marie of all people was ridiculous too. Distraction or not, it was dumb. AJ retains in a match that gets 7-10 minutes.

Flag Match

Jack Swagger vs. Rusev

RIF: Jack Swagger

Joe: Jack Swagger

Michael: Rusev

Dan: Rusev

I’m confident in saying that Rusev will suffer his first defeat here, sure it’s a Flag match eliminating the need to pin him but it’s a loss none the less. The thing I like about this feud is that neither man has been booked to look like the obvious winner and credit must go to the managers involved, Zeb Coulter & Lana have been terrific throughout the feud. Swagger winning makes sense for two reasons, the patriot stands tall at one of the biggest shows of the year and Rusev can still claim that nobody has pinned him or made him submit! We the people!

Randy Orton vs. Roman Reigns

RIF: Roman Reigns

Joe: Roman Reigns

Michael: Randy Orton

Dan: Roman Reigns

Since the break-up of the Shield, Reigns has been on a role. Its obvious WWE have big plans for him and he’s a rumoured contender to headline WrestleMania 31. He’s a talented guy and has that superstar look but he needs to work on his promo ability and perhaps update his ring attire.  Both men’s styles are too different to mesh and Orton has a track record of bad matches with guys that utilise a power based offense. Orton doesn’t need the win. He could lose a dozen PPV matches yet still keep his main event presence because he’s been in that position for so long. Putting over Reigns will give him that added boost and give him his biggest singles victory to date.

Chris Jericho vs. Bray Wyatt

RIF: Bray Wyatt

Joe: Chris Jericho

Michael: Bray Wyatt

Dan: Chris Jericho

Personally, I was disappointed that Jericho picked up the victory at Battleground. He didn’t need the victory. This time round, Harper & Rowan aren’t at ringside so a clean victory for Wyatt at SummerSlam is much deserved. Will it be a clean victory? More on that later! I remember their match on NXT and was very impressed by it and I expect the same here. Wyatt is obviously being groomed as the next big heel in WWE and he has gone on record to say that he doesn’t need to win matches to make a statement which is true but he can’t afford to lose a fourth straight PPV match. Wyatt should get the win; tie the series at one a piece so we can have the 3rd and final match at Night of Champions. I’m going to make a bold prediction here. Remember when I questioned whether this would be a clean victory? Well, with Harper & Rowan banned from ringside, my gut feeling says that a new member of the Wyatt Family will be introduced. You’ve heard it here first guy!

Brie Bella vs. Stephanie McMahon

RIF: Stephanie McMahon

Joe: Stephanie McMahon

Michael: Brie Bella

Dan: Brie Bella

This feud has been decent I admit, it started off between Triple H & Daniel Bryan but moved on to the women once it was reviled the true extend of Bryan’s neck problems. I hated the addition of “Daniel having affair with his therapist”. It was uncalled for and made no sense unless it was reviled to be a lie in attempt to mess with Brie’s head! Both women have had each other arrested, and both of them have physically assaulted each other, but it was Stephanie who took things to another level when she took out both Bellas with Pedigrees. I’m going with a Steph victory and you’ll find out my reasons for that later in this preview.

WWE World Heavyweight Championship

John Cena © vs. Brock Lesnar

RIF: Brock Lesnar

Joe: Brock Lesnar

Michael: Brock Lesnar

Dan: Brock Lesnar

I’m looking forward to this one. The two had an absolute brutal match at Extreme Rules in 2012 which I rate highly and while I don’t think this will match the brutality of that match, it will stand out that’s for sure! For this to better the Extreme Rules match, Cena needs to sell like crazy for Brock (Cena selling? HA!). No Superman comeback and no five moves of doom. Cena needs to put Brock over like crazy. He’s done it before against Umaga at the 2007 Royal Rumble so it’s not as if he incapable of doing so.  Lesnar/Heyman winning is definitely the right call. The match has the potential to be really, really strong, but its Heyman’s promo on Monday night I’m most looking forward to.

**Tie Breakers**

What will be the opening match?

RIF: IC title Match

Joe: Lumberjack Match

Michael: Orton v Reigns

Dan: IC title match

Shot in the dark but I recon it be a tossup between the IC title match or the Lumberjack match.

Will Nikki Bella get involved in the Brie/Steph match?

RIF: Yes

Joe: No

Michael: No

Dan: Yes

Since Brie ‘quit’, Nikki Bella has faced the full brunt of McMahon. She was put through hell during Brie’s absence which is why I think she’ll turn heel on her sister.

Will Seth Rollins cash in the MITB contract?

RIF: No

Joe: No

Michael: Yes

Dan: No

His time will come for sure but just no tonight.

Enjoy SummerSlam guys, feel free to post your predictions.
